The smallest people in the family, your children will inevitably take up the most room with all of their toys, books, games and clothes. But usually they have the smallest rooms when it comes to the bedrooms so how do you squeeze all of their stuff into a small bedroom? Storage space is at a premium and there is also the bed to get in there. So why not make the bed part of the solution?
Space saving beds have been around for a long time and many options exist today so what are the most popular choices and why?
The Sleep Station:
This option is the modified bunk bed design. The bottom bunk is removed and replaced with a combination of a desk, a cupboard or wardrobe, shelves or drawers. In fact it is all the bedroom furniture you might need in squeezed in to one. There are also sleep stations that have a couch underneath, for older children who have friends over and want to entertain in their room. The best space saving combination is the complete storage option, shelves, drawers, cupboard etc. with the desk in another part of the room. But if you have the space for another chest of drawers, then the desk option is a novelty and a younger child would enjoy playing dens in there while the older child might want to use it for gaming or homework.
The Cabin Bed
The cabin bed is a lower version of the sleep station. Because of the lack of head height underneath, the bed base is devoted to storage only. It contains a built in cupboard, drawers or shelves. Some have built in shelves covered by sliding doors. Others have large deep drawers ideal for storing clothes, bedding or toys. The foot of the bed may also have some integral shelving for extra space saving. Cabin beds work very well for younger children who have grown out their cots. The low panels of the box bed on top prevent them from rolling out of bed in the night and give the cosy feel that they are used to in their cot.
It is very important though that a small child can safely get into and out of the bed. Small steps are often built into the cabin beds and some have footholds that allow children to climb up more easily. If you are unsure it is wise to get some steps and have them attached to the bed yourself.
The size of your kids bedroom doesn’t have to be a bar to having a tidy and pleasant room for your them to sleep, play and study in. Space saving kids beds are a great way to have it all.
