The Right Sod Cutter Rental and How to Cut Sod

The garden you’ve always wanted to plant, the path you’d like to install, or that patch of grass you want to move from the side of your house to front– all of this can be accomplished with a sod cutter rental.  A sod cutter is used to cut and remove chunks of grass and the attached roots and dirt.  Once removed, this sod can be discarded or moved to a different location.  There are many different types of sod cutters available, and the one you choose will depend on the scope of your project, your budget, and your desired work level.

Manual sod cutters are the most inexpensive, and are all you need for removing small chunks of sod, or trimming up the edges of a garden or path.  The simplest form of manual sod cutter is basically a shovel with a pointed, serrated end. Although you could use a standard shovel for cutting sod, this modified shovel will cut the sod more easily, and is designed to lift up the edge of the sod for removal.  To cut sod with this tool, place the tip of the cutter into the grass, and then push straight down.  Repeat along the lines that you wish to cut.

For more precise cuts, you can use a curved, serrated blade that is rocked back and forth along the lines you wish to cut.  You can also purchase a sod cutter that can be attached to your shoe – you simply push your foot down to cut the sod.

If your project covers a larger area, then you may want to invest in power sod cutter rentals.  These machines have blades that cut into the sod as they are pushed along the desired lines.  Some will also roll up the sections of sod, making transport and replacement easier.

Sod cutter rental prices usually run around $90 a day for a power sod cutter.  Manual sod cutters can be purchased for as little as $35.
