Rock Garden Designs

If you’re a gardening enthusiast, a rock garden can add a wonderful touch to your yard. At its simplest, it can be created as a circle of rocks, which is filled with soil and multiple different flowers. This means that, come spring when the flowers bloom, so will the rock garden (so to speak).

The rock garden designs really depend upon your own style, the plants that grow in your local soil (and it’s a good idea to talk to your local garden center about this). What’s also important is to check that the plants you choose will all mature at the same time in the season. The reason for this is that flowers only bloom once a year, and if you choose flowers that all bloom at different times in the season, some of the rock garden will be empty soil while parts of it will have flowers on; this leads an odd and uneven looking garden.

In addition to this, before planting any flowers, ensure that the rock garden has suitable drainage. If you built it yourself then this is your responsibility to check — it simply means that you should leave gaps for any water to drain and the soil shouldn’t be too compacted. If it is and there’s heavy rainfall the plants could get “drowned” (not literally drowned, but if plants get too much water then can die).

In regard to the actual flowers you should chose: As mentioned, it is a personal choice; it’s dependent on upon local conditions and your own personal taste. However daffodils always work well as does scotch moss and wood spurge. A great place to find further information and get inspired is the landscaping section on about.com.

In general, building a rock garden is a very simple thing to do. So after you’ve planted the flowers, simply ensure that they’re well cared for whilst growing, and next spring, with a little work, your garden will be more impressive than you ever thought it could be.
