Types of Kitchen Canisters

Kitchen canisters are chosen for both their functionality and decorative properties.  Basically, a canister is for storing frequently-used food, such as flour, sugar, coffee, tea, and pasta. But they can be used for any number of non-perishable goods.

The most popular containers today are made of glass or ceramics, but they can also be found in metal, plastic, and wood.  If a wooden or metal canister isn’t lined with ceramic, it may not be the best source for storing unwrapped food items, like flour, because the natural material of the container may interact with the food and change the molecular structure.  This can often cause oxidation in the food, thereby spoiling it.  Some people assert that plastic containers also cause a chemical reaction or breakdown of food, but this is debatable, as other scientists don’t agree with this finding.

This is why ceramic and glass canisters are preferable.  They come in several shapes and a myriad of colors and decorative motifs to fit anyone’s style or budget.  Whether you live in a log cabin or in a chic, loft apartment, you can find a single canister or a matching group to fit your food storage needs.

When choosing a kitchen canister, you must consider the fit of the lid.  Does it create an air-tight seal for optimum food freshness, or does it merely sit on top of the canister? If you plan to store individually wrapped teabags, then the latter will suffice, but for something like coffee or flour, you’ll want to be sure you can maintain freshness with a tightly fitted closure.

Screw-on lids also lock out air and humidity, so antique canning jars with glass-lined, zinc lids are still seen in homes across America.  This is another thing to keep in mind when choosing which kitchen canisters you prefer; do you want your food to be displayed, or do you want the canister itself to be the display?

As you can see, the possibilities are endless.  It’s all up to your individual style and intended usage as to which type of kitchen canisters in which to invest. Check out www.bestkitchencanisters.com for more information on kitchen canisters, containers or other food storage devices.

The Joy Of Good Kitchen Sinks

It’s time to update your kitchen. The endless choices available today means you can create any environment you want if you are willing to put in a little effort making your choices. You will probably put a lot of thought into appliances, countertops, wood finishes, and accessories, but when it comes to making a decision about the sink, who really thinks twice about it?

Face it; there are certain amenities that are popular in kitchens today, but people rarely talk about their kitchen sinks. Who has ever heard of a sink breaking or cracking? There are sinks in homes that are over a hundred years old, so what difference does it make, right? Wrong!

There is a distinct difference between cheap sinks and quality stainless steel kitchen sinks. Today’s sinks have evolved into amazing, technological wonders. Sinks made with higher quality materials, such as 18 gauge steel, are able to give you amenities like an antibacterial coating, anti-stain technology, all natural materials, and heat resistance to 550 degrees. You’ll find specialized surfaces that resist scratching, and undercoating to reduce noise while in use. And because of the quality of these sinks, the best manufacturers will offer a lifetime guarantee.

Cheaper sinks are made with lower quality materials, which most likely don’t contain any of these features. Also, the cheaper the construction, the fewer choices you’ll have as they offer just a few standard choices.

Manufacturers of quality kitchen sinks are able to offer you a myriad of choices in styles, materials, and colors. They have research and development departments that are able to figure out what requirements the average homeowner may have. Companies making quality products can give you multi-level, variable double sinks. They can custom build a sink to fit your kitchen blueprints.

You spend thousands of dollars on the latest stainless steel appliances, and thousands more on a granite countertop. Isn’t it time to proudly include a striking, quality sink when you give guests the “grand tour” of your kitchen?

Carpet Replacement Guide for the Novice

Carpet replacement can be accomplished in two different ways: you can install it yourself or, you can hire a professional. Companies like Carpet Atlanta offer professional installation but if you are on a budget, hiring a pro is not always an option. If you plan to become a do-it-yourselfer you will quickly discover this is a difficult task. However, along with advanced planning, some specific tools, and a lot of hard work you can successfully manage this task.

You will need a variety of tools. These include everything from a utility knife to the ever-important knee kicker. Once you have your tools in place you need to make certain the floor is as clean as you can make it. The reason for this is simple: if you carpet over a bottle cap, or anything that stands up, it is most likely to cause the carpet to have a lump.

When you are ready to begin you will need to install tackless strips around the room. Next you will install the underpadding. This needs to be placed over the tacks. The tacks must be exposed once the padding is placed over them. Now you are ready for the carpet. You must be certain you have exact sizes. You will need enough room so you can lay out the carpet. If your garage floor is clean it is an ideal place to do this step. After you have completed the cutting of the carpet you need to take it to the room, roll it out, and put it in place. If you end up with two pieces of carpet, due to an excessive length of the room, you will need to adjust this step.

Now you attach the carpet to the tack strip. You will need to have your knee kicker here in order to properly stretch the carpet. Trim along the edge with your edge trimmer. You are ready now to trim the carpet at the doorway followed by putting down the door edge. You will need to clean up other areas, such as that around the vent openings.

Once you have installed your first carpet you will be ready for carpet replacement in other rooms in your home. It becomes easier with each installation and once you have the confidence to move forward, your home improvements will really pay off.

How to be a Socially Concious House Cleaner

House cleaning is not exactly a hot topic on the radar of the environmental movement.  However, there is a green cleaning component that most would-be environmentalist should know.

If you’re a germophobe, you’re likely to keep a very clean house.  You might even obsess about dirt and bacteria a little too much and reach for the bleach on too many occasions for your own good.  The fact is, too many chemicals is not good for you or the environment.  If you need to clean, you should use natural products.

A very simple household cleaner is good old fashion vinegar.  You can use vinegar to clean a variety of things from everything from kitchen appliances to bathroom sinks.  Vinegar works well with killing gems and bacteria because of its acidity level.  It truly is an all -purpose cleaning that helps with all house cleaning jobs.

House work is not just about using elbow grease and scrubbing.  It is also about organizing things around the house.  Let’s face it, if you want to do a good cleaning job, you need to move things out of the way first.  You can minimize the clutter around the house by always picking up after yourself regularly.  A quick ten minute tidy up is much better than hours of cleaning to get rid of weeks or even months of dirt.

Although we might not collect clutter like newspaper or junk mail that needs to be thrown away, sometimes we do collect other things that have outlived their usefulness.  Due to a connection we feel towards the object, we refuse to let it go.  However, if it makes you feel any better, that object that you feel an attachment to might be better served in the home of the less fortunate.  Once put into perspective, you realize how much good you do by giving it away to charity.

Although cleaning is not a hot topic of conversation for a lot of people, you can see what a big difference you can make in the environment and to charity.  So next time you do some green house cleaning or give something away, you can feel very proud of yourself.

Sewage Pumps

Sewage pumps are one of the most interesting devices used in modern plumbing. The main purpose of a sewage pump is to help waste and waste-water overcome the effects of gravity and travel through a sewage system. The main uses of sewage pumps are when there is a need for a waste and waste water to collect at a level below the main sewage line. This is often the case in basements of homes. The basement might have a bathroom, washer and dryer, or kitchen that produces waste-water.  It is often the case that this waste-water must be pumped up since the home’s main waste line might be just below the main level. In situations like these, a sewage pump is used.

The sewage pump essentially grinds or chops the waste products into a muddy liquid. Once the waste material is predominately liquid the pumps motor engages and provides pressure which drives the waste up the pipe and into the main sewage line. This usually occurs in just a few seconds. There is usually a large reservoir for waste-water that fills partially prior to the sewage pump engaging. The pump itself contains a float similar to the float that appears in the back of the toilet tank. Once the liquid in the sewage reservoir rises to a certain point the float triggers the motor to kick on and this activates the pump. Now once the pump is activated it will pump the liquid out, causing the float to fall back down and then the pump will turn off. Depending on the size of the reservoir there may be quite a bit of waste stored at one time in between the the pumps activations.

Sewage pumps come in a variety of configurations including submersibles, grinders, and choppers. These all have one thing in common, they allow a plumber to have much more flexibility when designing sewage systems.

Installing a Basement Closet

If you need extra storage space for your family, you could build a set of basement closets. Unless a home is specifically custom designed to have a finished basement, the basement is often left as a large unused space in the home. The first thing you want to do before building your closets is to make sure the area is moisture free. If the basement has a tendency to retain moisture it will also have a tendency to create mold and mildew on any objects that may be stored down there. Using the proper dehumidifier and having adequate ventilation in the basement can help control the moisture.

If you want to build the storage space yourself, you can begin by attaching simple two by fours to the rafters of the basement ceiling. Once you have the support beams in place, you can then create some useful shelving units you can use as storage. You can also construct a freestanding closet for your basement area. You can find instructions and kits available for assembling closets at any home improvement center. You can create an attached closet if your basement has an existing area that has wood construction as a frame such as the stairs.

Building a closet in the basement will help provide storage space for the types of items your family does not use year round. If you have an area of the basement that has been remodeled a bit for use as a recreation area, the added  space can be used to store games and activities that can be used there. If you are intending to store clothing or other fabric items such as blankets in the basement, it would be best to place them in an airtight container or bag to prevent any chance of damage from mold and mildew.

You can also choose to hire a professional company to install your basement closets. This would be a good option if you already have your basement refinished or are in the process of having it done. The expense and quality of materials used by a professional company would not be worth installing in a standard cement basement. If you do plan on remodeling your basement and choose to incorporate some closets into the design, it will add to the overall value of the home. There are also financial institutions that will give home improvement loans to people that are looking to improve the quality of their home, if you need extra financing to finish your basement.

Enhance Your Garden With A Gazebo Canopy

One of the greatest joys is to be able to hang out in your yard or garden on a nice sunny day. The problem is that sometimes, the sun can be a bit too hot. With all of the dangers of too much sun exposure, you will definitely want to increase the amount of shading in your yard. If you don’t have a lot of trees surrounding your yard, this can be difficult. What you can do to create your own shade is install a gazebo canopy. These things are easy to set up and will provide you and your family with the proper amount of shade so that you can enjoy your time outside a bit more.

In order to make sure your canopy top lasts for years to come, you will want to make sure that you buy one that is made of quality material and if you are not going to be using it for long periods of time, you need to take it down. The combination if wind, heat from the sun, and rain is enough to cause a lot of damage to it. Although these things don’t really cost all that much, you still don’t want to have to replace it every year. What you can do if you have some damage to the canopy is to get replacement canopy tops. These will vary in terms of cost but you should be able to get one for under $100. Make sure you get the right size.

Now even with something such as a canopy gazebo, you will still want to make sure you limit your exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Whenever you are outdoors, you need to make sure that you wear plenty of sunscreen with at least 30 SPF or higher. This is something that needs to be paid more attention to. So go out and setup your gazebo canopy and enjoy the extra shade.

A Guide to the Murphy Bed Mechanism

For small spaces and rooms that must serve several functions, the Murphy bed is one of many versatile options available. The Murphy bed is designed to fold up into the wall while not in use, leaving the space a bed would normally permanently take up available as functioning living or work space. It is a popular option in home offices that must double as a guest bedroom for this reason. While folded up, the cabinet looks like part of the decor and can even house some shelving for books and memorabilia. When the bed is needed, it can quickly be pulled out of its cabinet and be ready for sleeping in moments.

While professional installation is an option, many people prefer the do-it-yourself method of purchasing a Murphy bed mechanism. The do-it-yourself method is often more affordable and allows for more customization since the cabinet wood choices are not limited to the availability through a particular manufacturer. When choosing a kit, double check what is included as some kits come with the bed frame and others offer the frame as an add-on component. Also, consider your space and its limitations. A floor mounted unit may not be the best idea for someone living in an apartment while a homeowner may be fine with it. Along the same lines, a twin or full sized Murphy bed may be perfect for a guest room but a queen may be necessary if it is a primary sleeping area. Also, check it see if the kit has a warranty and technical support in case assembly proves to be a challenge.

If in tight quarters or multifunctional spaces, a Murphy bed is just one of many options to optimize the available space. It can also be a green choice as making the most of the current available space usually negates the need for more space and energy use. For the same reason, a Murphy bed can also be a frugal option that opens up possibilities without costing more than what bargained for.

How Do Suction Pool Cleaners Work?

After a very long work week you now have to do your Saturday afternoon chores like mowing the lawn. You know it’s going to be hot out and all you can think about is jumping in your swimming pool when your done. You empty out your grass clippings and now the time has come to dive in your pool and completely cool off. You go right up to the edge and look down and see…that your pool is dirty.

Now you have another chore and that chore is called cleaning the swimming pool. Now you have to drag out the vacuum hoses and hook everything up and stand there moving around the vacuum while your still sweating in the hot hot sun.

This is the very reason why most inground swimming pool owner just go out and buy an automatic pool cleaner. There are so many to choose from but there is only three types that you have to know about. Robotic pool cleaners, pressure side pool cleaners and suction side pool cleaners.

Suction side pool cleaners are the most inexpensive pool cleaner and are simple to install if you already know how to set up your manual vacuum. You set it up the same exact way but instead of pushing it around the bottom of the pool yourself, this cleaner moves around all by itself.

The suction cleaner uses your filter system to suck up debris and dirt off the bottom of your pool and also uses the filter system to catch all that dirt. No need for a filter bag that you need to empty all the time. And while it’s running your pool is also being filtered.

So it’s definitely worth the investment and the thought of never having to set up a manual vacuum ever again is pretty good too.
