Metal Sheds FAQ

With all of the information out on the internet and in stores, sometimes it is easy to become overwhelmed with advertisements and suppliers with little general information. So here we are taking a minute to answer some frequently asked questions about metal sheds.

Question: Are all sheds made from metal?

Answer: No, not all sheds are made from metal. Other building material used for sheds include wood, pvc, and vinyl. Metal sheds can also be a combination of wood superstructure and metal siding and roofing.

Question: Are sheds complete units or do they require assembly?

Answer: There are three different ways sheds can be built. If purchasing one from a local supplier, the completely built sheds are fairly common. Built on skids they can be winched onto a flat bed truck or trailer and then delivered to the buyer’s home. The second type of shed is a kit. Kits come fully precut and only require assembly. The third type of shed is purchasing only the superstructure and then buying the metal siding and roofing separately.

Question: Which is the most durable type of shed?

Answer: A metal shed that is entirely metal have the longest life. Metal sheds with wood superstructure and metal shell are also long lasting, if the superstructure is made from pressure treated lumber. One vulnerable place is where the supports are exposed to the ground. Treated lumber helps alleviate the danger of rot.

Question: Are PVC or vinyl sheds long lasting?

Answer: Yes, these sheds are durable. They are usually smaller than wood or metal sheds with more limited color choices. PVC sheds are more designed for smaller spaces such as even a small patio or porch. Tall upright units are good for storing tools and things with long handles, even fishing poles.

Question: Which sheds need the most maintenance?

Answer: The metal sheds and the PVC/vinyl sheds require the least maintenance. Wooden sided sheds require the most attention. Wood, when left exposed to the weather becomes gray and rots, so keeping the siding painted or stained on a regular basis is necessary.

Metal sheds of all types are great for protecting assets and sustaining the life of things such as lawnmowers and other tools. Also, metal sheds are very good for providing an outdoor storage place. So taking the time to select either a full built one or a kit can help to remove things to be stored from your garage and move them to the shed. Building shelves and installing hooks in a shed can also help to provide organization to everything from toys to tools, fishing poles to Christmas items.
