Installing a Basement Closet

If you need extra storage space for your family, you could build a set of basement closets. Unless a home is specifically custom designed to have a finished basement, the basement is often left as a large unused space in the home. The first thing you want to do before building your closets is to make sure the area is moisture free. If the basement has a tendency to retain moisture it will also have a tendency to create mold and mildew on any objects that may be stored down there. Using the proper dehumidifier and having adequate ventilation in the basement can help control the moisture.

If you want to build the storage space yourself, you can begin by attaching simple two by fours to the rafters of the basement ceiling. Once you have the support beams in place, you can then create some useful shelving units you can use as storage. You can also construct a freestanding closet for your basement area. You can find instructions and kits available for assembling closets at any home improvement center. You can create an attached closet if your basement has an existing area that has wood construction as a frame such as the stairs.

Building a closet in the basement will help provide storage space for the types of items your family does not use year round. If you have an area of the basement that has been remodeled a bit for use as a recreation area, the added  space can be used to store games and activities that can be used there. If you are intending to store clothing or other fabric items such as blankets in the basement, it would be best to place them in an airtight container or bag to prevent any chance of damage from mold and mildew.

You can also choose to hire a professional company to install your basement closets. This would be a good option if you already have your basement refinished or are in the process of having it done. The expense and quality of materials used by a professional company would not be worth installing in a standard cement basement. If you do plan on remodeling your basement and choose to incorporate some closets into the design, it will add to the overall value of the home. There are also financial institutions that will give home improvement loans to people that are looking to improve the quality of their home, if you need extra financing to finish your basement.
