The deck will actually build right on your screen as you add to it or change it, and this is a great way to experiment with as many different designs as you want to until you can find the one that is right for you. These programs range in price from around $20 up to around $100, depending on the features you want.
Once you have created a design you like, the higher end programs have some very cool features that let you go further with your plan. You will be able to take objects like chairs, grills, potted plants, etc from a library of items within the program and place them into your deck design. This will allow you to see if your plan will accommodate your needs like you think it will. You might find that you need less space and so can make a smaller deck. Obviously this saves you money. You might also find that you need a bigger plan in order for it to handle the functions you want it to. This may not be good news as it will make your deck more expensive, but it is much better to find this out during the planning phase rather than after you have built the deck.
