Creating Your Own Garden Pond

A lot of people decide to create a garden pond themselves, instead of going and hiring a professional to do the job.  So, if you are one of those who are considering it, then you’ll be happy to find out that it isn’t as hard as you might think.  Be sure to do some solid research about what goes into making your own pond in your garden.  There are definitely some great books on the subject, as well as some great internet resources that will walk you through it, as well as provide some great garden pump designs.  I will give you a quick overview to help you to see what’s involved with creating your own pond.

Before you start digging, you definitely want to find out what the best spot will be.  It is also important to call your local “Call before you dig” phone number, so that you don’t mess anything up.  How big your garden in will help to determine exactly how big your bond will be able to be.  The depth of the pond is definitely important for considering if you are planning on keeping fish in the pond.  The fish need enough room to swim around, especially if you live in a colder climate where the top of the pond may freeze.  The fish and plants won’t like it if the pond is in the shade or under some tress where the sunlight would be blocked.

Once you have decided on a place to dig, go ahead and start digging and once the whole is created, then you’ll want to put the liner in.  You don’t want all of the pond water to be drained, or else it won’t be much of a pond, will it?

Garden ponds, especially smaller ponds, build up waste so you need to determine what you’ll be doing to get rid of the waste.  If you have a larger pond, you’ll be able to get rid of the waste more efficiently than you would with a smaller pond.  Any pet store or home and garden store will have a good filter, as well as garden pond pumps, for you to use.  You can also add some gravel that will also help to make your pond more realistic.  It will also help you create a bed that will act as a way to help to control any bacteria.

That’s it!  You can start adding your fish to the pond, but only do so one by one.  That way the pond can get used to the bacteria of that fish, and you can slowly introduce more and more fish.  I hope you enjoy both the process of creating a new pond, as well as being able to enjoy the pond once it is finished!
